On Cloudultra Shoe Review

The On Cloudultra trail running shoe is now available. I recently reviewed the On Cloudstratus and really liked this maximum support shoe. The Cloudstratus was lightweight, supportive, and really felt great from the very first run. As much as I liked this shoe, I thought I would continue trying another On Running shoe. This time, I wanted to try one of their trail shoes as I have a 25K trail race next month.

This Cloudultra shoe I reviewed is an updated version of the original shoe and was excited to give this shoe a try.

Sizing Recommendation: I recommend ordering a 1/2 size up when buying the On Cloudultra shoe.

At the time of this review there were three color options available for the Cloudultra shoe.

On Cloudultra Shoe Verdict

If you are looking for a trail shoe that provides incredible traction and support, I recommend trying the On Cloudultra running shoe.

The On Cloudultra is a great trail shoe that provides plenty of support and a great trail running shoe for all conditions. One thing I would say is that if you are looking for a fast and super lightweight trail shoe, there are better options than this shoe.

The double layered foam and sock-fit construction provide the optimal amount of comfort and support, something you will notice as soon as you put the shoe. While there is a double layered foam, this shoe does take a few runs to break in.

This On Cloudultra running shoe is expensive and retails for $180.

While this is the first iteration of the shoe, I fully expect On to evolve and continue this shoe due to the performance and popularity of this shoe.

About the On Cloudultra Shoe

The On Cloudultra running shoe is the top of the line trail shoe from On. The dual-layer of foam and sock-fit upper makes this shoe fit like a sock that provides incredible support. This shoe is a little heavier than some other On shoes due to the traction and sole on this shoe.

I currently run in the On Cloudflyer and On Cloudstratus and can honestly say that these are some of the most comfortable shoes I have worn. I kind of wish I didn’t like them as much because they cost so much.

The On Cloudultra shoe has an 8mm drop, which is the drop amount I prefer and similar to other Saucony shoes I run in.

On Cloudultra Initial Thoughts

I wasn’t sure what to think about the Cloudultra due to the sock-fit construction. The shoe looked great online, but never saw it in person before buying the shoes. I have trail shoes from Brooks and Saucony, and was very curious to see how these would compare.

I first wore these on a 9 mile run, which included some road and some trail. The shoes felt great from the start and were light enough to finish 3 miles at marathon pace. I loved the lightweight feel and responsiveness of the dual-layer of foam sole.

These shoes not only felt great, but looked stylish enough to wear around town.

On Cloudultra Upper

The upper part of the Cloudultra is different than most On running shoes. The sock-fit upper is really comfortable and slides on nicely, keeping rocks and other debris out while running on trails. I wasn’t sure if this was something I would like, but I really liked it.

The two layer mesh upper is lightweight and breathes well. If you look closely at the pictures below, you will the different layers of the upper portion of the shoe. If you want to wear this shoe in the winter, make sure you wear warm socks as some folks have said that these are almost too cold during winter runs.

The other thing that is great with this shoe is the FlipRelease lacing system. This lacing system provides a custom fit, adding to the comfort of this shoe.

On Cloudultra Sole

The one thing that stood out to me with this shoe was how well this shoe performed on trails. Typically shoes will slip on leaves, sticks, and rocks, but this shoe had incredible traction on all surfaces.

The Cloudultra sole has Missiongrip technology, which is are multi-directional lugs made of high-abrasion rubber, made to increase traction and grip on trail surfaces. I wore these on rocks and the road, both of which felt great.

The Helion foam is light, supportive, and durable. I am looking forward to wearing these on more trail adventures and seeing how they perform in the snow as winter approaches.
