Hoka One One Challenger ATR Verdict
The Hoka One One Challenger is my favorite trail shoe. The lightweight, supportive feel along with the aggressive sole make this my favorite shoe to run trails with. These shoes are lightweight and flexibility enough to be used on any surface or in any race.
About the Hoka One One Challenger ATR
The Hoka One One Challenger ATR may be the best trail running shoe I have ever worn. This shoe weighs in at just over 9 ounces. The shoe would be lighter if it weren’t for the aggressive trail sole.
I’m not a huge fan of the colors, but the shoe is available in 4 different colors. My favorite color is the black model.
The Challenger ATR offers incredible cushioning in a lightweight and aggressive shoe. The early stage Meta-Rocker geometry provides a fluid and efficient ride. The stripped down SpeedFrame upper is lightweight and allows you to run on any surface with ease.

Hoka One One Challenger ATR Initial Thoughts
Having worn the Cliftons before and knowing that these were pretty much the trail version, I had very high expectations.
When I received the shoes, they looked better than expected and the aggressive trail sole looked like it could handle any type of surface. The lightweight feel and exceptional cushion made for an amazing first run.
Hoka One One Challenger ATR Sole
The Hoka One One Challenger ATR sole provides the perfect amount of support and cushion. The Meta-Rocker technology supports a natural motion and encourages running mechanics. Hoka One One describes the Meta-Rocker as being “specifically engineered with a low heel-toe differential and a sculpted outsole radius in the heel and toe, creates a unique fulcrum effect and encourages a guided foot gait cycle.”
Besides the Meta Rocker technology, the Hoka One One Challenger ATR has 4mm lugs that provide all-terrain traction on all surfaces.
Hoka One One Challenger ATR Upper
The Hoka One One Challenger ATR upper is a lightweight closed mesh material that is ideal for trail running. The closed mesh not only keeps your feet cool, but keeps debris, rocks, and dirt. The shoe tends to run wider than the other brands I have worn so I had to tighten the laces more than I usually do.
I have read about some people who have had issues with the sole and upper falling apart with this shoe, but I am glad to say that the shoes I have worn are still in great shape and are holding up great.
