Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 Shoe Review

Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 Shoe Review

Adidas Supernova Sequence 9

I have heard so many great things about the Adidas Supernova Sequence running shoe but have never been able to try them out. When I saw the latest version of the Adidas Supernova Sequence running shoe, I had to try them out. I figured a shoe that has had 9 versions must be doing something right.

If you have read any of my shoe reviews or blog posts, I have been a big fan of the Adidas boost technology ever since I started running in the Adidas Tempo Adizero shoe.

I have looked for another pair of shoes for training and was hoping that the new Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 shoe would fill that void.

Below is a complete review along with pictures, pros/cons, and a rating for this updated Adidas stability running shoe.

Pros Cons
  • Lightweight
  • Responsive Feel
  • Boost Technology
  • Sizing – Runs large. Order 1/2 size down
  • Color Options

Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 Shoe Verdict

If you are looking for a responsive and supportive stability shoe, I would recommend giving these shoes a try. The shoe itself felt great, but felt the eyelets and upper came up too high on my ankle and put pressures on my upper ankle that bothered my foot.

I really liked the color of the shoes I bought and enjoyed the responsiveness of the boost sole, just the upper wasn’t mean for me. If this doesn’t bother your feet, then I would give them a shot.

If you are going to order, make sure you order a half-size down, as the shoes run large. I normally wear a size 11 in Asics, Brooks, Altra, and every other running shoe. For these I had to order a 10.5 for this review.

As I mentioned, this is a great shoe with the exception of the upper part of the shoe that bothered my feet.

The Active Guy Initial Thoughts

When I first opened the box of the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9, I was excited with the latest design and colors of the shoe that I ordered from Amazon.

When I first put the shoes on, the boost soles felt responsive and extremely comfortable. A great start to any new running shoe review.

After I tied the shoe, the eyelets and upper of the shoe seemed to come up higher than some of the other Adidas shoes I wore, causing some discomfort.

When I ordered the first pair of these shoes I had to return them since these shoes run large. Please note, I would order a 1/2 size down for this model.

Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 Running Shoe Overview

The Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 running shoe is a great daily trainer that is in the performance stability shoe category. This shoe is ideal for slight to mild overpronated foot motion.

The boost midsole provides a responsive and supportive running shoe that is great for those longer runs. You could wear these for pace runs, but may be a little heavy for racing (10.9 oz).

Like other Adidas Boost running shoes, the sole has a Continental rubber outsole that provides traction in wet or dry conditions.

Supernova Sequence 9 Running Shoe Sole

The updated sole of this shoe comes with a similar Continental rubber outsole designed to give improved traction and responsiveness. If you have the Supernova Sequence 8 shoes, then you will notice an all new sole with the latest model.

As I mentioned earlier I never wore the previous model, but after doing some research on the previous model, the all new sole looks like the sole on the Adizero Tempo shoes.

The Continental sole has soft feel and responsive ride. If you haven’t tried on any Adidas boost shoes, I suggest giving them a try, or at least squeezing the sole when you have the opportunity. They really have a unique feel.

Below are two pictures of the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 sole.

Adidas Adizero Supernova Sequence 9 Shoe Upper

The updated version of the Supernova Sequence 9 has an updated mesh upper that provides a better fit and increased breathability. The upper has seamless overlays, which look better and provide a secure fit.

One other thing to mention is the sockliner of the shoe. It felt great and was comfortable, but longer than what I prefer in a running shoe.

I wasn’t a fan of was how far the eyelets went up on the shoe. They just seemed to come up higher than expected and ended up bothering my ankle/foot. It may be hard to see in pictures, but the sides of the shoe by the ankle were higher than expected. Since I never wore the previous model, I can’t tell if it is similar to last years model. Based by looking at pictures online, it looks redesigned for the latest model.

I did like the extra rubber at the toe of the shoe that will help keep your toes dry with mild water and moisture.

Below are 5 pictures of the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 upper part of the shoe.

  • No!!!! the fit does “NOT” run slow.
I just ordered a half size down pair according to this review and the fit was too snug for any type of ride. I mostly wear a mildly padded pair of socks on the sole, and tried the pair with them, it was snug. Then switched the socks to a regular thin pair, and it was still snug, finally barefoot and same result. Now I have to return it back.
I read a lot of other reviewers after and most of them put that they ordered their regular sizes, it was good but the space on the toes were there.
I must say apparently the space on the toe area comes with the design but it is “NOT” related to the fit, if you want this model stick with your normal size, but be ready for the additional space (which I prefer more..) If you want a more snug fit, I urge you to look for another model or brand with a different fit, like Nike Zoom Odyssey (I would go with the first one)
Finally, the arch support and stability is definitely there but not as obvious and aggressive as Nike Zoom Odyssey or Zoom Structure 19, these are good shoes but with different comfort.
Overall Sequence 9 feels softer, very cushioned, snug around the heel and arch in a comfy way which will not cause any blisters.
Even though size didn’t didn’t fit me it is more likely that my normal size will be much better fit overall, and I would recommend this model for longer runs or walking with high tempo rather than fast sprints..

    • Ren, I am sorry to hear that the shoe didn’t fit as expected. I have had a few other people tell me similar sizing issues like the one I experienced. I am glad to hear that you were able to work things out in the end by ordering your normal shoe size. Thanks for the comment and feedback. Happy running!
