If you have read any of my other shoe reviews, than you know the Hoka One One Clifton shoe is one of my favorites. I was thrilled to try the latest Clifton 2 running shoe and write a review for others to read.

Below are pictures of the shoe along with a detailed review. There are 4 available colors with the first production of this shoe. I would imagine that extra colors will come out later this year.

Pros Cons
  • Lightweight feel
  • 4 Colors
  • Supportive sole
  • True sizing
  • Price (retail $130)
  • Sole durability

Hoka One One Clifton 2 Verdict

Before this shoe came out, the Hoka One One Clifton was my favorite. The Hoka One One Clifton 2 shoe is now my favorite road running shoe. The lightweight, supportive feel give a smooth and enjoyable ride on all surfaces. These shoes are lightweight and supportive enough to wear for daily or tempo runs.

About the Hoka One One Clifton 2

The Hoka One One Clifton 2 is another great Hoka One One running shoe. This shoe weighs in at just over 9 ounces, which is similar to the original Clifton model. I like the updated tongue and laces on the Clifton 2 model. The updated tongue is a little thicker which provides a more comfortable feel and the laces are easier to tie than the original model.

If you are looking for a fast, lightweight, and supportive shoe, then the Clifton 2 is for you. Even though the shoe is a few ounces heavier than the original model, it is still extremely lightweight.

Hoka One One Clifton 2 Initial Thoughts

Having worn the original Cliftons and loving them, I had very high expectations for this updated version.

When I received the shoes and put the shoes on, they not only looked better than expected, but was excited with the updated tongue. The tongue on the original model was thin, where the updated tongue has a slight cushion and updated laces, which make the shoe much more comfortable to wear.

The lightweight feel and exceptional cushion made for an amazing first run in these shoes.

Hoka One One Clifton 2 Sole

The Hoka One One Clifton 2 sole is very similar to the original Clifton model. Similar to the original Clifton model, the Meta-Rocker technology supports a natural runners form, and encourages efficient running mechanics. If you are unfamiliar with the Meta-Rocker technology, Hoka One One describes it as being “specifically engineered with a low heel-toe differential and a sculpted outsole radius in the heel and toe, creates a unique fulcrum effect and encourages a guided foot gait cycle.”

The Hoka One One Clifton 2 shoe has an active foot frame, which provides stability for all foot types and is even adaptable to most types of feet and running styles.

As I have mentioned over and over, the Clifton model is my favorite shoe and the sole makes this shoe feel amazing with every step.

Hoka One One Clifton 2 Upper

The Hoka One One Clifton had a few updates to the upper piece of this shoe. The upper is a lightweight and thin material that held up way better than I expected in the original version. The shoe tends to run wider than the other brands I have worn and my toes appreciate the extra toe room.

The major update with this model is the updated tongue and laces. As I mentioned earlier in the review, the updated tongue has some added cushion, which makes for a very comfortable fit. Hoka One One also updated the laces that allow for an improved fit when tying the shoes.

The Hoka One One Clifton 2 running shoe is my favorite update of 2015. With the updated colors, tongue, and lacing along with all the original features of the first version of this shoe, make it my go to shoe for daily training runs.

  • I have been wearing the Hoka Stinsons ATRs for the past few months, but now I am in the market for a lighter weight shoe. I was thinking of purchasing either the original Cliftons, or the Challenger ATRs, or the Clifton 2 model. I run both on roads and trails. I have a road marathon coming up in Oct, followed by a trail 50-miler in Nov, then a 100-miler in Feb.
In your opinion, which shoe would be able to withstand all of the above, to include training as well?
    Thanks!

    • My decision would be made based on which surface I would run on most. The recent female winner of the Western 100 was wearing the Challenger ATRs. The update to the Clifton 2 model is probably my favorite of the year. I would go with the Clifton 2 if you are running more on road and Challenger ATR if you are running more on trails. The tread is more aggressive on the ATRs as you can see from the pics in my review.
