Topo Athletic Magnifly Shoe Review

Topo Athletic Magnifly Shoe Review

Topo Athletic Main

I was first turned on to shoes with wide toe boxes after I started having foot problems from an increased level of cycling with extremely narrow Sidi cycling shoes. It took me a while to realize what was causing the problem, but finally did and sold the shoes. Eventually things started to improve and I was on the hunt for new shoes that would give my feet ample room. After doing some research, I initially found and started wearing the Altra Provision and Altra Impulse. Both of these shoes were great.

The wide toe box of these shoes allowed me to run with minimal pain and provided the support and comfort I was used to with the typical Brooks and Saucony shoes I normally wear. Fast forward to 2016 and one night on #RunChat, one of the sponsors, Topo Athletic mentioned their wide toe box running shoes.

After reading a few reviews and loving the look of these shoes, I ordered a pair online to try and ultimately review.

Pros Cons
  • Lightweight feel
  • Wide toe box
  • Awesome colors
  • True sizing
  • Hard to find on sale

Topo Athletic Magnifly Shoe Verdict

Ever since I have added the Magnifly to my shoe rotation, I am always excited to put these on and run. The lightweight, responsive feel, and wide toe box really make for a great run, each and every time.

One thing that I really like is the tongue has just a touch of padding, which makes it comfortable when tied. If you are looking for a lightweight, comfortable running those, I would recommend giving these a try.

Here are a few pictures of the shoes I reviewed before running in them. I can only wish they still looked this new.

Topo Athletic Magnifly Shoe Initial Thoughts

I had read a number of great things about the Magnifly before ordering so I had high expectations before receiving them. The 5mm drop helps support a natural gait and running motion.

Upon opening the box, I was impressed with how light the shoes were along with the great color. The one thing that Topo Athletic does a tremendous job of is putting together shoes with great color combinations. Something many other major shoe companies struggle with in my opinion.

The wide toe box was immediately welcomed by feet as soon as I laced these up.

Topo Athletic Magnifly Shoe Overview

As I mentioned, I researched these shoes and read time and time again that these shoes provide great cushioning that provide a responsive ride and a wide toe box and snug in the heel area. If you visit and read the details of this shoe on the Topo Athletic site, you will see something similar.

The 5mm drop is a little different from the Altras I have been running in, but welcome the change. One thing that surprised me was that the Topo Athletic site said to order a 1/2 size up. I ordered the same size I wore in Brooks, Altra, and Saucony and had no problems with the fit.

Weighing in at 8.8 oz for a men’s size 9, these shoes are a great weight for those daily runs. This shoe is competitively priced at $110.

Topo Athletic Magnifly Shoe Sole

The sole of the Magnifly is made up of a dual-layer outsole, which helps with durability and life of the sole. One of the many things I read was that the sole lasts longer than most shoes.

In addition to a double layer outside, the midsole is composed of a dual-layer midsole that gives the right amount of support and cushion. From the first run in these, I was always impressed with how the sole and midsole felt.

The heel area is slightly narrow, which provides a secure and comfortable fit.

Topo Athletic Magnifly Shoe Upper

Not only are the uppers of most Topo Athletics have great color combinations, but most of them have an upper made of mesh that is one layer. This helps keep the shoe light and provides breathability. The only thing that concerns me with a single layer upper shoe is durability. Based on what I have read, these shoes have a long life, but wanted to at least mention that.

As I mentioned earlier in the post, the tongue has the perfect amount of cushion that makes the shoe extremely comfortable when the shoe is tied. The forefoot has a higher than normal toe box so your feet can do as they please and not have to worry about being crunched. The sock liner is a nice touch that improves fit and increases comfort.

  • How does it compare to the Altra Provision 2.5? I had the Altra Provision 1.5 and they were perfect. The Altra Provision 2.5 is narrower in the toebox and I’m hoping the Topo Magnifly is closer to the fit of the Altra Provision 1.5.

    • Thanks for the question Kristin. I have worn both and the support and feel of the Provision 2 and 2.5 are way softer than the Magnifly. I do like the wider toe boxes in both of these shoes and didn’t notice a big difference between the Provision 2.0 and 2.5. Let me know how they turn out.
