On Cloudstratus 2 Shoe Review

The updated On Cloudstratus 2 running shoe is now available! I have always liked the look of On running shoes, but never considered trying some of their shoes because they were way too expensive. It’s somewhat easy to get a great pair of running shoes for under $100 and these retail for $170. At this price point, they better deliver a great experience.

There were minimal changes to the latest version of this shoe, so if you liked the original version, you will also like the dual-layer of CloudTec pods for a soft and supportive ride. These shoes immediately made me think of Hokas when I put them on.

Sizing Recommendation: I would recommend ordering a 1/2 size up when buying the On Cloudstratus.

At the time of this review there were two color options, both that I really liked. Besides the blue option below, they also have a white version.

On Cloudstratus 2 Shoe Verdict

Our Rating:
Viewer Rating:

I have always been skeptical about On running shoes. I always felt like they were the trendy, cool looking shoes that wouldn’t be great running shoes.

The Cloudstratus continues to surprise me each time I put these on. They are light, supportive, and really feel great for training runs of all distances. I prefer to wear these on longer and recovery runs, but really could be used for any training effort.

This On Cloudstratus running shoe is expensive and retails for $170.

The Cloudstratus had minor updates from its original version, so if you liked the original version, you will like the updated version. While I love this shoe, they are expensive. I’m really curious to see the durability of these shoes.

If you are looking for a supportive and responsive running shoe, give the On Cloudstratus a try.

About the On Cloudstratus 2 Shoe

The On Cloudstratus running is the maximum support shoe from On. The dual-layer of CloudTec pods really does provide an incredible amount of support. To have two layers of support at 10.7oz is something that many running shoes can’t compare to.

I currently have a pair of the On Cloudflyer that I also like, but if I had to choose between these shoes, I would pick the Cloudstratus every time. The mesh upper provides just enough support and makes this shoe extremely comfortable.

The On Cloudstratus has an 8mm drop, which I prefer for faster efforts. Like previous versions of this shoe, the Cloudstratus continues to be great for races of all distances, from a 5k to a marathon.

Once you put the Cloudstratus on, you won’t want to take it off.

On Cloudstratus 2 Initial Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier, I have worn the On Cloudflyer and really liked them. While I liked them, I could never justify spending the amount that some On running shoes and apparel cost.

I first wore these on a 6 mile run, that included a few 400’s. The shoes felt great from the start and were light enough that they worked for a little bit of speedwork. I loved the lightweight feel and responsiveness of the dual-layer of CloudTec pods.

These shoes not only felt great, but looked stylish enough to wear around town.

On Cloudstratus 2 Upper

The upper part of the Cloudstratus is very similar to the original version of this running shoe. The upper material continues to be an engineered mesh that combines comfort and support. I was a little skeptical about how it would feel, but it looks and feels great.

The one thing you will notice about this shoe is the lacing system. There are multiple ways to tie these shoes. If you want a personalized fit, this is certainly available with this shoe. I left the laces the way they were when the shoe arrived.

There were minimal updates to the upper portion of the On Cloudstratus running shoe.

The ribbed sock liner helps to reduce pronation, something that you will also see in the On Cloudflyer shoe.

Below are a few pictures of the upper portion of the Asics Cloudstratus.

On Cloudstratus 2 Sole

The sole of all On running shoes is always something new for runners who aren’t used to the pods. One thing that occasionally bugs me is when I get a rock stuck in the sole. If you can avoid smaller rocks, you will love these shoes.

The Cloudstratus shoes have a dual-layer of CloudTec pods, making this shoe plush and supportive, similar to a Hoka shoe. The other thing you will notice is the orange speedboard that runs underneath the shoe. This polypropylene Speedboard helps promote a responsive turnover, making this shoe even faster.

The Helion foam is light, supportive, and supposed to be durable. At the time of this review, I have around 50 miles on these shoes so I can’t speak to the durability of the sole. I am hopeful that they will be durable like the other shoes I have worn.

Below are a few pictures of the sole on the On Cloudstratus sole.
