On Cloudflyer Shoe Review

Ever since I first saw the On Cloudflyer shoe, I was always interested in giving this shoe a try. The unique sole makes it stand out and the stylish design sparked my curiosity with how it would work as a pure running shoe.

While this shoe isn’t nearly as popular as Saucony, Asics, Brooks, or Nike shoes, once you see these shoes you will start to notice more people are wearing them. One thing that concerns me a little bit is the pricing and sizing, something which I’ll explain later on in the review.

Depending on where you buy this shoe, it has over 5 color options, which really gives you a choice of what color combination works best for you.

According to on-running.com, these shoes have “12 “Cloud” elements built from Zero-Gravity foa provide supreme cushioning while staying lightweight, making the Cloudflyer the perfect long distance running shoe. They cushion intelligently while activating the inherent stability of your body and gait.”

Below are pictures of the On Cloudflyer that I wore for this review. At the time of this review, I have seen over 5 different color options, most of which are pretty cool.

After wearing the On Cloudflyer on multiple distance runs, I must say that I like the shoe, but don’t think I would spend $160 on this shoe. While On Running says that this shoe is great for longer distances, I thought the shoe felt a little firmer than what I would want for runs longer than 8-10 miles.

Sizing: Sizing on the shoe was way off for me as well. I typically wear an 11-11.5. I ordered an 11.5 and it was a half size to full-size too big, something to think about when ordering.

Some reviews I have read also state that the forefoot was a little narrow. While I have had issues with other narrow shoes, these didn’t bother me.

If you like a firmer ride with a comfortable fit, give this shoe a try.

About the On Cloudflyer

The On Cloudflyer is a stability running shoe a Zero-Gravity foam sole, making it supportive, responsive, and lightweight. The shoe weighs in around 9-10oz depending on size.

The knitted one-piece mesh upper and dual density sock-liner provide incredible comfort and support.

One thing that I really liked about the shoe was the tongue and the way that the laces were tied. It was the right amount of thickness and very comfortable when tying the shoe.

On Cloudflyer Initial thoughts

When I first opened the box of the On Cloudflyer shoe, I was immediately impressed with the craftsmanship of the shoe. The shoe felt solid and everything looked like it was built with care.

I walked around the house with them a few times prior to running outside in them. Even though the sizing was way off, the shoe was very comfortable and I really liked the tongue.

Prior to ordering, I read a number of other reviews about this shoe. Many said sizing was an issue along with a narrow forefoot. I agree on both points. The sizing was at least a 1/2 size to a full size off. The forefoot didn’t feel too narrow, at least while walking in them.

During my first 4 mile run, the shoe felt pretty good. The shoe was a bit firmer than I expected and the forefoot was a little narrower but didn’t seem to be a big deal. I did like the weight and style of the shoe.

On Cloudflyer Upper

The On Cloudflyer upper is made up of a knitted mesh liner that hugs your foot, something that you will notice when you first slip the shoe on. The seamless upper improves the stability of the shoe and really provides a comfortable fit.

The heel strap simplifies the way that you put the shoe and allows you to quickly slide your foot into the shoe.

The reflective piece on the heel piece provides visibiilty when running at dusk or night.

One thing that I really liked was the star lacing system of the Cloudflyer. Not only does it look cool, but it provides a secure and comfortable fit.

On Cloudflyer Sole

The On Cloudflyer sole is one of the main things that makes this shoe unique. As I mentioned earlier in the post, the Zero-Gravity foam looks cool, but does feel a little firmer than I expected.

While the shoe is a little firmer, the 12-piece foam sole is unique and really does look pretty cool. One thing I did read but never experienced is that some runners had issues with rocks and debris getting stuck in the channel that runs through the middle of the sole. While the channel helps with flexibility, it could be annoying to have debris stuck in the sole while running.

The sole rubber is low density provides improved durability.
