Hoka One One Clifton 7 Review

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Shoe

The Hoka Clifton 7 running shoe is now available! If you are avid reader of this blog then you know I have been reviewing this shoe since its inception. The simplicity of this shoe and price continue to make it one of my favorites.

The shoe for the most part is similar to the Clifton 6, so if you were looking for some big changes to this years model you won’t find them this year.

The Clifton 7 continues to have a wider fit than some of the earlier versions of this shoe. The shoe is still a little narrow, but better than previous versions.

At the time of this review, Hoka was offering  seven color options, so pretty much something for everyone. One thing to note is that only select colors are available in the wide version.

If you are a Clifton fan and enjoyed running in the Clifton 6, you will like the updated Clifton 7. While the updates to this shoe are minor, the shoe continues to perform. The newly designed upper will make the shoe feel even better than its predecessor.

The Clifton 7 continues to have a wide model option in 2 colors, which is nice in case you need to have this option.

With regards to sizing, I still recommend ordering a 1/2 size up. I wear a size 11.5 in Brooks and Saucony and wore an 11.5 in the Clifton 7. I prefer running in these for daily training and tempo runs while I usually wear the Saucony Hurricane ISO for long runs.

If you are looking for a neutral running shoe that is responsive, lightweight, and fast, give the Clifton 7 a try!

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Initial Thoughts

Having worn every version of the Hoka One One Clifton shoe, I had a very good idea of what to expect with this version. I did read that the updates to the shoe were mainly to the upper portion of the shoe, so I was curious to see how this would impact my overall opinion of this popular shoe.

The first thing I noticed about these shoes was the unique heel flap/tongue. While this never bothered me at all while running, it was just something that I thought was interesting when I first saw the shoe.

Sizing Tip: Some sites tell you to order a 1/2 size up and others say that they run true to size. When sites say different sizing suggestions, it tells me these are probably in the middle of running true to size. I ordered a 1/2 size up to get the right size.

The Clifton 7’s continues to be lightweight and supportive enough to wear for daily or tempo runs.

This is my favorite version of the Clifton shoe behind the original version of the Clifton.

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Overview

The Hoka One One Clifton 7 running shoe is a neutral supportive running shoe that provides a lightweight and responsive feel making it great for daily training, long runs, and even tempo workouts. The updated version is a little lighter (8.7 oz for men’s size 9) than the Clifton 6, something I didn’t notice until reading online.

The lightweight shoe combined with the Early Stage Meta-Rocker technology helps to continue to promote a natural running motion. The shoe feels very similar to the Clifton 6, with a minor update to the upper portion of the shoe.

Hoka One One describes the early meta rocker technology as being “specifically engineered with a low heel-toe differential and a sculpted out-sole radius in the heel and toe, creates a unique fulcrum effect and encourages a guided foot gait cycle.”

The high abrasion rubber sole provides traction on most surfaces. This shoe is recommended for road surfaces, paved trails, or the track. Wearing these on actual trails will reduce the life of the midsole.

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Sole

The Hoka One One Clifton 7 midsole was unchanged with this version.

The sole continues to be flexible and adapts better to the surface you are running on. If you haven’t worn Hoka’s or Clifton’s before, you will appreciate the support and cushion that these shoes have, all at 8.7oz.

The sole continues to have the Early Meta-Rocker technology, which supports and promotes a more efficient running form, something I wish more shoes had.

Below are a few pictures of the Clifton 7 sole.

Hoka One One Clifton 7 Upper

The Clifton 7 upper was updated with the latest version of this shoe. The main updates to the shoe include a redesigned upper that improves breathability, while a  gusset connection on the tongue helps keep everything in place and improves the overall experience when you don’t have to worry about the tongue moving.

The seamless construction includes a 3D puff print frame and overlays making this shoe contour to your feet better for increased comfort.

The Clifton 7 continues to have a slightly wider toe box, which is something I really need.
