Brooks Neuro 3 Shoe Review

Brooks Neuro 3

The all-new Brooks Neuro 3 not only looks better but feels better than its previous version. If you haven’t heard of the Neuro 3, it’s a neutral running shoe that is lightweight, responsive, and extremely flexible.

The two previous versions of this shoe not only looked a little weird but didn’t feel nearly as good as the latest version. The original version of the shoe almost looked like a shoe an astronaut would wear in space. It was that bad. The second version of the shoe was a big improvement, but still not nearly as great as the latest version.

The changes to the Neuro 3 aren’t a great improvement from the two previous version. The mesh upper improves the overall comfort of this neutral running shoe.

The Neuro 3 continues the tradition of a Brooks neutral shoe that is great for daily and tempo runs.

I do like the color of the shoe worn in this review but have struggled with some of the other colors of recent Brooks Running shoes. This shoe has a limited number of colors to choose from. Even the women’s color was pretty cool.

Here are a few pros and cons of the Neuro 3 running shoe.

Pros Cons
  • Lightweight
  • Responsive
  • Run true to size
  • Price ($120)

Brooks Neuro 3 Shoe Verdict

Our Rating:
Viewer Rating:

If you are looking for a lightweight neutral shoe that is great for tempo or faster workouts, give the Brooks Neuro 3 a try!

The updated woven mesh upper is very comfortable while securing your foot. The one thing that I was concerned about was the width of the toebox. While it felt a little narrower than other Brooks shoes, the mesh material stretched to provide a solid fit.

These shoes are reasonably priced at $120. You can usually find a coupon for these so I wouldn’t pay retail (see discounts at the bottom of the review).

The longest run completed in these shoes was 8 miles. They felt lightweight and fast, almost like the Nike Free due to the flexibility of the shoe with extra support.

One thing to note is that if you prefer extra support and cushion, you may want to try the Brooks Levitate, Brooks Ghost, or Brooks Launch.

Brooks Neuro 3 Shoe Initial Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier, I was not a fan of the initial version of this shoe. With the second version, it made great strides with look, feel, and performance. When I saw the latest version, I wanted to give it a try. I am always looking for comfortable shoes that I can wear for running and to wear around town.

I have a pair of Nike Free Runs that I like and are great for shorter runs and for wearing around town. I’m all about comfort.

When I first opened the box and picked up the shoes, I immediately noticed how flexible the sole was. Since it is two pieces, it was almost as flexible as the Nike Frees. The shoe was lightweight and I really liked the feel of the mesh upper.

When I first put these shoes on they felt lightweight and very comfortable. My initial thoughts about these shoes were that they would be a great shoe to wear for shorter or faster workouts, just wasn’t sure I would want to wear them for long runs.

Brooks Neuro 3 Shoe Overview

The Brooks Neuro 3 is a neutral running shoe designed for runners with a neutral running gate. While I usually run in stability shoes, I wanted to give this shoe a try as it felt similar to a shoe I previously wore.

Like its predecessor, this shoe provides a natural running feel, with a medium heel to forefoot drop of 6mm. The one thing that is very different about this shoe model is that the midsole has a segmented platform, making it extremely flexible. It really is incredible if you haven’t seen these in person.

The redesigned upper feels comfortable and provides plenty of stability. Weighing in at 9.2 oz for a men’s size 9, these shoes feel light and responsive.

Brooks Neuro 3 Shoe Upper

The Brooks Neuro 3 upper was updated with the latest version of the shoe. As I mentioned earlier, the woven mesh really does provide a bit of stability while offering a stylish look. I will tell you that my wife thought the color combination was awesome. I would agree.

The segmented sockliner provides additional cushioning while maintaining the increased flexibility.

If you have heard anyone talk about the second-skin-fit, its due to the Dynamic Hammock System. This creates a wrap that improves foot alignment and support. Something you will notice when wearing these shoes.

The tongue of the shoe is thick enough to add a bit of cushion when tying the shoe. A great combination when you add it to to the Dynamic Hammock System technology.

Below are a few pictures of the Neuro 3 upper region of the shoe.

Brooks Neuro 3 Shoe Sole

The Brooks Neuro 3 sole had no changes to the latest version of this shoe. The shoe continues to have the Forefoot Propulsion Pods that help provide the bouncy feel to each step. Something you will notice immediately.

The high abrasion rubber sole should provide extended durability, but I will tell you when feeling the rubber, it didn’t feel like something that would last for a few hundred miles. I would recommend running in these shoes on roads or light trails.

The Dual Toe Flex allows the big toe more room and allows the foot to have a more natural push-off and provides improved balance while running, something that is used in other Brooks shoes.
