Brooks Beast 18 Shoe Review

Brooks Beast 18

The all-new Brooks Beast 18 has a few solid updates that you will like if you are a fan of this shoe. If you haven’t heard of the Beast 18, it’s a motion control running shoe that provides more support than any of the Brooks running shoes.

I have never worn the Brooks Beast shoe before so I was sure what to expect other than solid stability shoe with plenty of support. Having recently reviewed the Brooks PureCadence 7 and the Brooks Neuro 3, I was used to running in lightweight and responsive shoes.

The updates to the Beast 18 make this version even better than the last. The mesh upper and wide toebox make this version better than the last.

The Beast 18 continues the tradition of a Brooks stability shoe that is ready to take the pounding for those looking for a heavy duty support shoe.

The two color options aren’t great, but the color worn in this review were ok. I haven’t been a fan of some of the colors of recent Brooks Running shoes. No matter what color these shoes are, they are just heavy duty so they looked a little clunky.

Here are a few pros and cons of the Beast 18 running shoe.

Pros Cons
  • Supportive
  • Run true to size
  • Price ($160)
  • Heavy/Weight

Brooks Beast 18 Shoe Verdict

Viewer Rating:

If you are looking for a heavy duty stability shoe that is a little heavier, then give the Brooks Beast 18 a try! If you prefer a lightweight shoe, then I would stay away.

The updated mesh upper was a nice change along with a wider toe box to help those with wider feet. So many shoes have started to be more narrow so this was a nice thing to notice.

For how heavy these shoes felt, I thought they were overpriced at $160. You can usually find a coupon for these so I wouldn’t pay retail (see discounts at the bottom of the review).

The longest run completed in these shoes was 10 miles. As much as I wanted to like these shoes, they felt heavy and clunky. Some may be used to a heavier and supportive shoe, but I have been running in light shoes like the Brooks Levitate, Brooks GhostBrooks PureCadence 7 and the Brooks Neuro 3.

Brooks Beast 18 Shoe Initial Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier, I am very used to running in lightweight running shoes. When I first ordered the Brooks Beast 18, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I saw that the shoe weight 13.1 oz, but wasn’t sure what that would actually feel like while running. The majority of shoes I have been running in were around 9-10 oz, so 13.1 oz is a big difference.

I have run in a few other heavy supportive shoes, like the Asics Kayano, but nothing as heavy duty as the Brooks Beast 18. This was a shoe that was unlike others I have worn.

When I first opened the box and picked up the shoes, I noticed how heavy and rigid the shoe felt. After putting them on, they were more flexible than I originally thought, just still much heavier than other shoes I run in.

With my first run, they felt a little clunky and were a little harder to get used to than some of the other shoes I have recently reviewed.

Brooks Beast 18 Shoe Overview

The Brooks Beast 18 is a motion control running shoe designed for runners who need a little extra support and stability. While I usually run in stability shoes, I wanted to give this heavy duty shoe a try to see how it compared to some of the lighter shoes I usually run in. This shoe has been around for awhile and figured there was a good reason for it.

Like its predecessor, this shoe continues to provide plenty of support, with a medium heel to forefoot drop of 12mm. The drop is higher than any shoe I currently own or have run in. The shoe

The redesigned upper and 3D arch saddles are comfortable and provide an increased level of comfort. Weighing in at 13.1 oz for a men’s size 9, these shoes are a bit heavier than most running shoes.

Brooks Beast 18 Shoe Upper

The Brooks Beast 18 upper was updated with the latest version of the shoe. As I mentioned earlier, the updated mesh upper breathes better and is a bit wider for those who need a little extra width.

The updated arch straps increase support while improving comfort. I also thought the tongue was comfortable. The tongue of the shoe is thick enough to add a bit of cushion when tying the shoe.

The Ultimate Sockliner is well cushioned provides decent moisture wicking capabilities.

Brooks Beast 18 Shoe Sole

The Brooks Beast 18 sole had minimal changes to the latest version of this shoe. The shoe continues to have a high abrasion sole for increased durability and traction. I would recommend running in these shoes on roads or light trails.

The Omega Flex Grooves improve flexibility all while offering additional support and cushion. When I first wore these shoes, they felt really stiff but loosened up after a few runs.

Like most Brooks shoes, the Beast 18 sole includes Super DNA material, which offers more cushioning and molds to your foot provide a great fit.

I am currently using this shoe and find them outstanding. This shoe in my opinion is geared toward heavier runners. I average over 35 miles a week at 260 lbs and the benefit of these over the Asics GT-2000 6 were felt after the first workout. My arches are thanking me…

    • Jeremy, thanks for the note. I would definitely agree with you about your comment. I am around 175 lbs and I personally think this feels like a little too much shoe. I do think there is definitely an audience though as this shoe continues to be very popular. Appreciate the comment. Happy running!
