ASICS Kayano Lite 2 Review

ASICS has continued to create another version of the Gel-Kayano Lite after a successful first iteration of this shoe. For those who have enjoyed the classic Gel-Kayano, the support and stability provided by this shoe make it a popular shoe for those who overpronate.

The changes to the second version of the Kayano Lite were minimal, so if you like the first version, you will continue to like the updated Gel-Kayano Lite 2 shoe.

One thing to note is that Asics continues to sell the updated model, Gel-Kayano 28. For weight comparison purposes, the Gel-Kayano Lite 2 is over 2 ounces lighter than the Gel-Kayano 28.

The Gel-Kayano^® Lite 2 running shoe is lightweight and more sustainable. Almost a lighter version of the popular Kayano running shoe.

If you are looking for a max stability running shoe, I would recommend giving this shoe a try. One thing to note is that these shoes are great for long runs, but were not my favorite shoe option for speed or tempo workouts. I am a fan of the 10mm drop, which is higher than some of the other shoes I currently run in.

Up until the Kayano Lite, I only wore the Asics DS-Trainer and the Asics GT-2000 shoes. I loved both, just don’t wear them as much as I used to. If I had to choose an Asics stability for an every day trainer, I would choose the Gel-Kayano Lite 2.

I have read a number of other reviews about the forefoot being narrow. I had no issues with this during the 10 runs used to review the Gel-Kayano Lite 2.

About the ASICS GEL-Kayano Lite 2

The ASICS GEL-Kayano Lite remains unchanged for the most part. The Gel-Kayano Lite 2 is an ASICS max stability running shoe equipped with FlyteFoam sole technology. I almost look at the Gel-Kayano Lite 2 as a much lighter Kayano 28 running shoe.

The GEL-KAYANO™ Lite model is new to our performance running line. Like its namesake, this shoe produces excellent comfort underfoot and added support designed to set the foot up for an efficient toe-off.

The one thing that continues to stand out about this shoe is that it is eco-friendly. The upper mesh is constructed mainly of recycled materials and the FLYTEFOAM^® is made of organic materials, which I thought was great that a running shoe could help save the planet. 

ASICS GEL-Kayano Lite 2 Initial thoughts

I was excited to try the Gel-Kayano Lite 2, but wasn’t sure what to expect as I had read a number of other reviews, some positive, some negative. I read that some thought the upper was too narrow and some thought the shoe was a bit rigid at higher speeds.

When I opened the box, I wasn’t a huge fan of the color, but something I could get over. I will say that great color options are always a selling point in my mind. 

My first run was a 6 miler around my neighborhood. This shoe felt great, mostly because it was a slow and steady run. I did pick up the pace towards the end and didn’t experience any of the issues that some had mentioned in other reviews.

ASICS GEL-Kayano Lite 2 Upper

The Asics GEL-Kayano Lite engineered mesh upper was really the only thing that changed with the updated version of this shoe. The upper is even more eco-friendly than before. The upper breathes well, remains lightweight, and is made of 30-60% of recycled materials. Again, this is something that is really cool to see a running company do.

With a focus on sustainability, this shoe keeps your step stable and your mind light. The engineered mesh upper is made with a higher percentage of recycled materials than the previous version.

The overlays provide a great fit that allows you to lace up and go. One other thing I thought was creative was the reflective materials that are part of the upper material. 

The mesh upper on these shoes may not be the best for runs in snow or rain.

ASICS GEL-Kayano Lite 2 Sole

The sole of the Asics GEL-Kayano Lite continues to use Eco FlyteFoam^®, which it means it continues to be lightweight and more durable than other foam soles.

The sole is made of High Abrasion Rubber+ (AHAR), meaning it is extremely durable.

If you look at the heel picture below, the concaved shape helps to improve support and stability. It may look a little chunky, but is still super light and comfortable.
