Altra Provision 2.5 Running Shoe Review

If you read my Altra Provision 2.0 review, then you know I am a big fan of this running shoe model. I really like the wider toe box and similar cushion to the Hoka running shoes. Don’t get me wrong, they don’t as soft as Hoka, but a similar feel. I was excited to give the updated version a try after my great experiences with the Altra Provision 2.0.

The 2.0 model felt awesome after a few runs and was curious if the updated model would need the same type of break-in time.

Below are pictures of the Provision 2.5 shoes that I wore for this review. There are 4 available colors for this shoe, all of which are decent colors. I wouldn’t say I love the colors, but definitely solid colors. My favorite are the grey/red.

About the Altra Provision 2.5

The Altra Provision 2.5 is a performance stability shoe designed to reduce pronation and support runners who need a little support. The StabiliPod technology used in these shoes, aids with excess pronation.

Similar to the previous version, the Altra Provision 2.5 provides cushion and support that is similar to some Hoka One One shoes. The shoes have less of a marshmallow feel, but still have some similarities in my opinion.

These shoes are lightweight in that they are 10.1 oz (size 9) and are great for those longer to mid-distance runs. Like all Altra shoes, these shoes have a wider toe box, allowing feet and toes to stay comfortable and improve balance.

Altra Provision 2.5 Initial thoughts

When I first opened the box of the Altra Provision 2.5 and saw the shoe, it reminded me alot of the previous version (Provision 2.0). The upper of the shoe and the sole not only looked similar, but seemed to be the same weight. As you continue to read this review, you will notice that there are many similarities with the upper and sole as the previous version.

I had a feeling that I would like the updated Altra Provision 2.5 based on the similarities of the components of this shoe. The shoe itself has had some minor updates, all of which make the feel and look of the shoe similar to the previous version.

The first few steps in these shoes seemed a bit rigid and stiff, but after some walking and a few strides, I could tell that the shoes would break-in nicely. Don’t expect these to feel like Hoka’s right out of the box, because they won’t.

Weighing in at around 10oz, the shoe seemed light for how supportive it felt.

Altra Provision 2.5 Sole

The Altra Provision 2.5 sole is made of Ultralight EVA, which provides lightweight and increased durability. Even though the sole of the Provision 2.0 has over 300 miles on them, they still provided the support and cushion I expect from Altra.

The Natural Ride System (NRS) helps with overpronation and provides a more natural running motion. In addition, the StabiliPod technology in the midsole provides support in 3 areas of sole, providing a better ride and improved comfort. This also reduces excess pronation and provides a more supportive feel and support.

I did notice that the sole did wear quicker than I expected in the 2.0 version, something I hope is corrected with the 2.5 model.

Altra Provision 2.5 Upper

The Provision 2.5 changed a bit from the previous version. The updated mesh upper improves breathability while keeping the foot dry during warm runs. The shoe has thick 5mm insoles that give more support, especially with those who need more arch support.

One thing I have read in a few other reviews were the fact that people had issues with the heel slipping. The heel claw design, I had no issues with this.

The A-Wrap feature secures your foot while allowing your feet the extra room for a comfortable and stable run. I also liked the new shoelaces that came with the shoe. A minor update that I thought was a good change.
