Altra Impulse Shoe Review

Altra Impulse Running Shoe Review

Ever since my foot started bothering me, I have looked for shoes that reduce the pain I experience when running. After seeing a podiatrist and talking to a few runners, I wanted to find a supportive shoe with a wider toe box.

I was talking to a friend of mine about my foot pain and they asked whether I have tried running in Altras, due to their wide toe box. Having read a number of other reviews online and tweeting with other runners, I wanted to give the Impulse or Provision a shot.

Below are pictures of the Altra Impulse shoes that I picked up and will be reviewing. There are 2 colors of this shoe, both are ok.

Pros Cons
  • Wide toe box
  • Lightweight comfort
  • True sizing
  • Price ($120 retail)
  • Sole durability
  • Color Options

Altra Impulse Verdict

I was skeptical about the Altra zero drop and wide toe box shoes that Altra sells. After running in the Altra Provision 2.0 and the Altra Impulse, I am a firm believer in these shoes.

The wide toe box and lightweight support make these shoes great for daily training and tempo runs.

About the Altra Impulse

The Altra Men’s Impulse Running Shoe was designed to give a lightweight and supportive shoe that encourages natural running form.

These lightweight shoes (8.6oz) not only provide stability in a zero drop sole that allows a more natural running motion.

These shoes have a wide toe box that allows your feet to remain comfortable and spread out, improving balance.

Altra Impulse Initial thoughts

I will be honest, when I first tried Altras on, I didn’t think I would like the shoe. The flat sole and wide toe box not only made these shoes look a little different, but felt a little different.

The shoes out of the box were lightweight and comfortable, just as I expected. The wide toe box provided my feet the space they needed and really allowed me to run comfortably.

After the 3rd or 4th run, these shoes started to break in and really started to feel great. Don’t be discouraged if they don’t feel great on the first run.

Altra Impulse Sole

The Altra Impulse sole is made of Ultralight EVA, which provides lightweight and durable cushioning. Part of the reason the shoe weighs only 8.6oz.

The Natural Ride System (NRS) helps with overpronation and provides a more natural running motion.

The StabiliPod technology in the midsole provides support in 3 areas of sole, providing a better ride and improved comfort.

Altra Impulse Upper

These shoes are lightweight for a number of reasons, including the materials of the upper of this shoe. The upper of this shoe is mainly mesh, which improves breathability and is lightweight.

The heel has a heel claw to improve support and comfortable fit. Some runners have mentioned that the heel has slipped while running. I never experienced this with either of the Altra shoes I have run in thus far.

The one thing I really like about these shoes is the 5mm insole. They provide additional support in this lightweight performance running shoe.

The Active Guy Conclusion and Rating

The Altra Impulse is a great tempo and racing shoe. I was a little skeptical about the zero drop, but after multiple runs in these and the Altra Provision 2.0, I am a believer. The wide toe box feels great and allows my feet to stay comfortable.

These shoes have an affordable price making them a best buy for me.
