2018 Cleveland Marathon Training

2018 Cleveland Marathon Training

40 days until Cleveland Marathon.

Last time I posted an update I mentioned how crazy it was to think that it was almost April. Well, it’s officially April. It has been almost 3 weeks since I last posted and since then I’ve had a great 12-miler, some fun speedwork, and one hell of a cold virus.

After my last 18-miler, I was excited to see how my training would progress as we get closer to the Cleveland Marathon. One thing that I was also dealing with 2 weeks ago was a sick child. My 19-month old was home all week from daycare. This was tough as I had to have my Mother and Mother-in-Law help out during the week while my wife and I worked. As the week went on, my son had a fever on and off and by weeks end, he seemed to be feeling better.

Last Saturday, I went out for a 12-miler in short sleeves and shorts. While the sun was out, it was still a little cool to be running without another core layer. As I finished the run, by the way, felt great, I noticed a little cough starting in my chest. I figured it was due to the cold weather and that would be short-lived. When I woke up Monday, not only was my cough getting worse, but I felt warm and ended up having a fever of over 103.

To make a long story short, I was sick all last week. I ran 3 times for a whopping 15 miles. What was supposed to be a 50-55 mile week ended up being a fraction of the anticipated weekly mileage. The one thing that running has taught me is that you have to listen to your body and you have to be flexible. Both are much easier said than done.

Here is a picture of the table in my office. Yep, cough drops, cold medicine, and tissues. Good times.

Now that I am starting to feel better I am hoping to make up the missed runs by including speedwork and another 18-miler in this week. I’m really hoping that my week-long illness was a good thing for my body and that it doesn’t impact my goals for the Cleveland Marathon.

Cleveland Marathon Training Plan

Every week I try to get some speedwork in, a tempo run, and a long run every other weekend. I recently did a workout with 4 1200’s and 2 800’s. While it was a tough workout, it was great to see how these tough workouts are paying off. If you haven’t done 1200m or mile repeats, I highly recommend them. While they are tough, they really do help with efficiency and promote natural running motions.

The plan for the upcoming week is to get a long run in this weekend along with some 1200 repeats or an 8-9 mile at marathon race page. The weather should be warming up this week so I’m looking forward to something other than cold and snow.

Race schedule and weekly running photos

I am still planning on running the Hermes 10 miler so I can understand what kind of shape I am in. I wanted to run the Canton Marathon half, but really don’t know about that with this past week of being sick.

Here are a few pictures from this past week. The one picture is from my street and a local park. If you are surprised by the snow, don’t be. Northeast Ohio can have snow through May. If you follow me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, then you may have already seen these pictures.

Weekly training details

Here are the details of my training this week. The details below include running and cycling workouts.

Weekly Mileage: 47 miles running, 7 miles cycling

I continue to slowly increase my mileage (no more than 10%) as we get closer to the 2018 Cleveland Marathon.
